Do you ever get so caught up in a project that you can’t stop?
SEO work can feel like an endless list of tasks. It’s important to set boundaries to make your work and personal life healthier and more productive.
When people think of SEO, they might picture someone working non-stop, surrounded by pizza boxes and coffee cups, and looking very tired. It’s true that SEO professionals often love their work, and it can even become a hobby. But having boundaries is essential, especially in a job that never seems to end.
So, how do you set boundaries?
Setting Boundaries with Colleagues and Clients
When you start working with a new client or on a project, it’s best to set boundaries right away. It’s harder to do this later.
Make it clear that SEO is a long-term strategy. This means results take time. Educate your colleagues and clients about this to manage their expectations.
Allocate specific times for deep work and research. Block out your calendar during these times, and let people know not to disturb you.
Stick to your dedicated work times and avoid answering emails or talking to colleagues during those times.
Set up regular reporting and meetings to review progress. This reduces the need for constant updates.
Limit the times when clients and colleagues can contact you about SEO. Be available during those times, but not outside of them.
Try not to answer emails or messages outside of your working hours. If you do, set your replies to send the next workday morning.
Don’t let colleagues or clients contact you through social media. Direct them to your email or work number instead.
Setting Personal Boundaries
It’s hard to separate work from personal life when it’s just a click away. Consider having separate devices for work and personal use. At the very least, use separate email accounts.
If you can’t use separate devices, put your phone on airplane mode when you’re not working and keep it out of the bedroom. This makes it less tempting to check work messages at night.
Resist the urge to check your phone first thing in the morning. Give yourself some time to wake up and start the day without work distractions.
If you work from home, take a walk or do something you enjoy before starting work. This creates a clear separation between your personal and work time.
Minimize distractions when doing deep work. Close unnecessary computer tabs, put your phone on silent, wear noise-canceling headphones, or find a quiet place to work.
Boundaries in SEO help you work more efficiently, reduce stress, and build trust with clients and colleagues. They also allow you to maintain a work-life balance, leading to better performance. Dedicate time to activities you love, whether it’s exercise, socializing, or personal SEO projects.
